Reading to Self

Today we introduced  reading to self to the children.  Every day the children choose some books that they are interested in from anywhere in the classroom and then find a comfortable place to settle down and read.  Reading to self might include reading the pictures, reading the words or retelling the story.  We read to self every day to build up our stamina.
Today some children chose an atlas, picture books, Hadley's book he made about his hoilday in Australia, and home reader books to read. What amazing readers we have in Te Kakano!

Book Club

Each Friday, we get together in our Book Club groups. We get to share the books that we have read during the week. We can read the whole book or choose our favourite parts of the book. While we read, the rest of our group listen and then ask us relevant questions.

This week we came up with some questions we could ask each other about our books, such as:
1. What is the name of your favourite book?
2. What is your favourite page and why?
3. Describe your favourite character
4. How does the story make you feel and why?
We will keep adding to these questions as we learn more.

We really enjoy sharing our books and look forward to listening to other stories.
We can even bring in our favourite books from home if we wanted to. Last week Mrs James shared one of her favourite books called "The Hungry Caterpillar" and Mrs O shared "The Tiger Who Came to Tea".

What are some of your favourite books?

Finding out on Fridays - Literacy

Pop! Pop! Pop!

Where is that sound coming from??

On Friday we used our senses to think of words to describe popcorn.

We had to look really carefully at what the popcorn looked like as it came out of the popcorn maker.

We gave ideas to Mrs O'Dowda using words to describe the different things we saw, heard, smelt, touched and tasted.

            MMMMMMmmmmmm Popcorn!!!!!

Finding out on Fridays - Numeracy

On Friday we explored shapes during a group maths session.  We made shapes on the floor using a range of different objects.

Bella and Joyce collaborated together to make the rectangle shape using dominoes.

We also tried to make different shapes using toothpicks and plasticine.

We had to problem solve how to achieve this and look carefully at the pictures to help us.

We were really excited when we were able to make the shapes.

Mia even made a triangle within a triangle!

She used colours to create a pattern as well.
